Homemade Toothpaste Recipe
Conventional toothpastes while effective can be full of harmful chemicals. Some of these chemicals include artificial flavors, carcinogenic color dyes, fluoride, propylene glycol, sodium laureth sulfate, triclosan. These chemicals have been shown to be harmful for our health and our oral microbiome.
The recipes found on this page are my go to for a healthy toothpaste options. At the bottom of this page I will also include my favorite brands if you aren’t wanting to make your own.
Toothpaste
This formula is a great replacement for toothpaste. While it isn’t as ‘pasty’ as you would find in store bought toothpastes it does have a nice consistency. The formula will polish, remineralize, brightens teeth, reduce inflammation, and reduce plaque.
Ingredients:
- 3 tbsp calcium bentonite clay
- 1 tsp baking soda
- pinch of sea salt
- 2 tbsp fractionated coconut oil
- 1 – 2 drops of food-grade essential oil (I like to use peppermint but cinnamon and vanilla are also great options)
- 1-3 tsp of filtered water
- Glass container
- Wooden spoon
Notes: For extra teeth whitening effects add 2 tsp of activated charcoal to recipe.
Do not use metal to measure, mix, or store.
- In a glass container or jar, using a wooden spoon, stir together the clay, baking soda, salt, coconut oil, and essential oils.
- Once mixed, stir in 1 – 3 tsp of water to reach your desired consistency.
- Store in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid or silicone squeeze tube.
